"Hit it with a fireball as Fire Mario, or knock a Koopa shell into the pipe. You cannot stomp it. The safest strategy is simply to wait beside the pipe for it to retreat, then dash past."
Never stand directly on top of a pipe — the Piranha Plant will not come out if you are on the lip.
Wait next to the pipe until it fully retreats before jumping over.
Fire Mario can shoot it from a safe distance without breaking stride.
Pipes near the edge of platforms are especially dangerous — don't rush past them.
